Kenyan side Western Jaguars have registered the first win the ongoing Africa Cup for Club Champions tournament after beating Weatherhead from Uganda 2-0 at Sikh Union.

Jaguars had lost 2-1 to Kenyan champions Butali Sugar in their opening match played on Monday at the same venue and came in today’s clash seeking to redeem themselves as well as continue gathering more experience being their first time in the tournament.

The Kakamega based club got off the mark in the 14th minute through Ian Ouma who sounded the board through a field goal.

Job Wandera got the task one for Jaguars after scoring the second goal in the 28th minute from the spot after Weatherhead goalkeeper brought a prowling forward down.

Jaguars head coach Michael Malungu said the win will boost the confidence of his players ahead of the remaining group stage matches.

I am happy we bagged our first win in the tournament. We played well but there is still some work to be done especially in the forward department. We were good in progressing the ball but the finishing was wanting. If we build on the win, then we stand a chance of sailing to the final,” he said.

Jaguars who finished third in the recently concluded Premier League are set to bag freebies on Wednesday as their opponent Kada Stars of Nigeria did not travel.

Consequently, the Kenyan team will pick three points and five goals without breaking sweat.

In a letter addressed to the Local Organizing Committee, both Kada Stars and Kada Queens cited lack funds for their withdrawal from the tournament.

On behalf of Kada Stars and Kada Queens, I humbly write to convey to you that the two teams have, withdrawn due to unavoidable reasons not been able to make the trip to Kenya,” read part of the letter from the Nigeria Hockey Federation.
